A fight with her husband during their holiday in California leaves Jasmin Münchgstettner from the Bavarian town of Rosenheim stranded along a desert highway, forcing her to take up residence in the motel attached to the run-down Bagdad Café. This is owned by the short-fused Brenda whose constant nagging has just resulted in her husband taking off and leaving her and their failing business behind. Brenda is suspicious of her new loden-attired guests who has turned up out of nowhere, and is even more so when Jasmin starts helping out and making friends with her children as well as with the ensemble of curious characters staying at or working for the Bagdad Café, including a retired Hollywood set painter and a mute tattoo-artist.
